Presentation
Sylvia Katuszewski is an "inhabited" designer who lives in the companionship of poets (she notably maintained a correspondence with René Char). She models in the earth a cohort of totemic icons, suffering women or sore goddesses, saints flayed, poetic and bruised, beautiful in pain. Wounded and superb women, standing, women-children, women-mothers of a milky, tender and sweet whiteness sometimes bearing the stigmata of pain through a glance dripping with black or a scarification of the flesh. Totemic women, touching. Effigies of pain and beauty, tenderly modeled, as if unfinished… An art of paradox, born from the shock of cooking. The ordeal by fire shapes Sylvia Katuszewski's child-women, just like life! Adored icons, incensed relics, receptacle for men's prayers and adoration, Sylvia Katuszewski's sculptures nonetheless embody the suffering of women, mothers, lost or abandoned children, aborted maternity hospitals. An art of contrast where the flexibility of the treatment manages to strongly suggest the harshness of the subject. The exhibition of works by Sylvia Katuszewski invites a dialogue between oil pastels on paper and enamelled earthenware sculptures. If the sculpture appears as an art of ellipsis and restraint, the drawing on the contrary explodes in bright, flamboyant colors and occupies the entire space of the sheet. Thus, two ways of creating collide at the heart of the same exhibition. Two facets of the same artist: exuberant and liberated on paper, concentrated and forbidden in the earth.
