Born in 1977 - Australia
Recently exiled in Australia, DEM189 is a French artist born in 1977 in Beirut, Lebanon, he arrived in France in 1989. Coming from the graffiti culture of the early 90s, he is now a major figure of graffitti, member of the 90DBC, LBD and TCP, and part of the Parisian concept "French Kiss."
He has collaborated for a long time, with SETH (Julian Malland) and LEK, actively participating in important projects such as "The Mausoleum" in 2011 or "The entrails of the Palace" / Palais de Tokyo in 2012 (of which he is one of the initiators alongside Lek & Sowat), which have had a profound impact in the history of contemporary creations by graffitti artists.
In his first major solo exhibition in Paris, we were able to appreciate an important series of paintings in acrylic and airbrush, mixing the organic and mechanics. Emphasizing free and instinctive expression, Dem189 creates big complex compositions with a consuming proliferation of shapes, where esoteric symbols camouflage. If at first, he wanted to separate his work at the studio from his graffiti compositions, he lets these practices collide without inhibition now.
At the center of his work, Dem189 displays large graphic works of great complexity. where he reveals his need to reproduce both formal and technical experiences, bouncing in ideas that are imperative during the creation of a work, which leads him to the abstract, architectural and figurative. His early creations were inspired by European cartoons (such as Druillet Moebus or Metal Hurlant), which are not subject to any limitation in their shapes or topics. He worked regularly with Lek, particularly in the project "The Mausoleum" (2011) or "The Entrails of the Palace" / Palais de Tokyo (2012).
DEM189 is one of those exceptional artists, recognized by his peers for his skills, his incomparable technical mastery and the richness of his artistic universe which he never ceases to question and reinvent.
