Katarra Napaltjarri

Katarra was born around 1946 in the bush near Tjukurla. In 1966 she was brought with part of her family to Papunya. She is the second wife of Anatjari Tjakamarra, one of the creators of the artistic movement. She spends her time between Tjukurla and Kintore or Kiwirrkurra. She began painting in the early 2000s, probably in 2001. Her very gestural style or pointillism can be completely absent has allowed Katarra to differentiate herself and to forge a good reputation among fans of Aboriginal art. Her painting is inspired by themes treated by other Pintupi women such as Ningura Napurrula, even if the style opposes her to other artists (the composition could make think of Walangkura Napanangka, the lines brushed quickly, almost clumsily brings her closer by the invoice at Makinti Napanangka). The motifs evoke three sacred sites through which, in the Time of Dreams, a group of women passed. They stopped there, collected berries, performed ceremonies before continuing their journey. The small circles symbolize the berries with which we make a kind of flour while the large circles refer to the rocks and the water point (in Ngaminya, the “Country” of his mother located in the southwest of the current community. of Kiwirrkurra). In Tjukurla the Women Ancestors made ceremonial skirts as well as in Wirrulga, a site where the women of the Napaltjarri sub-section come to give birth.
