Born in 1984 - Austria
Born in Austria, in 1984, Mira Loew began her career as a photographer and filmmaker at the Federal Graphic Institute of Vienna, at the age of 14. She currently lives and works in London.
After travelling extensively throughout Asia, Loew went on to earn her BA degree in Fashion Photography at the London College of Fashion in 2009, and got as well a MA degree in Image and Communication, at the University of London in 2011.
Her work seeks to create a new artistic approach, situated within the realm of artistic photography by using aesthetic techniques and fashion photography. The exploration of the human body is a central topic in her work, which comprises naked bodies, portraits and more recently researches of the correlation between performance and photography.
Mira Loew works with her own body, just like a performer or a dancer, she uses the movement of the body as a means of expression. Seeking to communicate her daring and provocative perspective, she is particularly focus in the experience of inhabiting and experiencing the world through the female body.
She often combines smooth and dreamy images with feminine shapes.
Mira Loew works with a variety of photographic materials, including the medium format, the 35mm, black and white films with a grain effect, Polaroids and digital technologies. Fascinated with the delicacy of photographic surfaces, Loew often combines different materials to create a whole new process.
The photographic surface of her images are frequently altered, and the colors are manipulated, allowing the material and the texture of the photograph to meet in the foreground. She challenges the viewer to go beyond the idea of images as a representations of reality, and to explore deeper the relationship between human beauty, its fragility and mortality.
Mira Loew’s films have been screened at fashion and visual arts festivals throughout Europe, her photographic work has been exposed in exhibitions across Europe, Asia, Mexico & the USA.
