Presentation

Anneke Lauwaert is a Belgian artist born in Turnhout in 1968. Between 1986 and 1991 she studied Plastic Arts at Saint-Lucas Gent, in Pol Spilliaert and Jan Calmeyn's classes, specializing in sculpture. She was awarded the Prix de Sculpture of the "Les Carmes" competition in 1997, at Marche-en-Famenne and the Grand Prix Européen de la Sculpture in Viroinval, at the "Centre géographique de l'Europe des 15" in 2000. In 2010 she was the winner of the 2010 28th "Concours de la petite sculpture et de l'objet" in Harelbeke, Belgium.

As a sculptor, Anneke Lauwaert is attached to the materials she uses. She works in wood, concrete, rubber, stone or metallic wire and she has the special gift of revealing the intimate nature of each material. From this perspective, her artistic approach is a continuous research process. The juxtaposition of very different materials speaks of the dichotomies existing in society and in humans, a dichotomy that we live and experience every day.

In 2008, the artist discovered rubber and its surprising and new possibilities it could open for her. She keeps exploiting this material today, combining it with various other, in surprising and rich combinations.
