Yves Zurstrassen

Born in 1956 - Belgium

BIOGRAPHY

Yves Zurstrassen was born in Brussels in 1956, where he continues to live and paint. In the 1980s, he began to investigate the principles of 'Tachism' or 'Abstract Expressionism' as found in the work of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Hans Hofmann. Drawing from these traditions he slowly began to formulate his own artistic language which has often been dubbed 'a new abstraction'.

Characterized by their vibrant colours and erratic forms, Zurstrassen's paintings could bring even the dullest of spaces to life. He has defined a new direction in line with those who, keeping geometric abstraction at a distance, have opted for a more formal, expressive and sophisticated language. However, his particularity stems from a creative process that he developed around the year 2000 and which has fundamentally transformed his painting: the techniques of application and removal – collage, and its opposite, décollage. Zurstrassen's preoccupation with spatial depth and movement has resulted in the employment of the décollage technique. The general principle is the application of different shapes of fine paper on successive layers of colour and their removal: thus the canvas is primarily handled from the background towards the surface, built up with multiple textured layers which optically pulsate across the canvas.

Zurstrassen has been a major presence in the international market, for some time now and has exhibited in prominent galleries and museums throughout Europe including the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain in Liège, at Galerie Dominion in Montreal as well as at numerous international art fairs abroad including Art Basel, Art Brussels, ARCO Madrid, TEFAF Maastricht and FIAC Paris among others.
