Presentation

Raphaël Kettani is a young Belgian artist, born in 1992. He lives and works in Brussels. He studied communication and visual arts, before completely devoting himself to painting.

Raphaël Kettani creates paintings swarming with details in a naive, natural and colored manner, namely free figuration (like Keith Haring).

Inspired by comic books, graffiti and taking after "bad printing" (this term appeared in 1978 in New York to point out American artists who deliberately created mediocre paintings compared to the good artistic taste of the 70's), his work is characterized through repeated underlined shapes in black and bright colors.

Lines, colors and figures are resonant of artists in the 80's. However, when one observes every single detail, the difference is visible. Therefore, one has to study, analyze the works. Indeed, Keith Haring did influence the artist, but he's not the only one.

The obvious intertwining of Kettani's works is inspired by Celtic artistic vocabulary, Eurasia steppes but also the illustrations of Irish monks and works of the Indian Americans.

After the artist turned 23, his works took root in unexpected environments.

His favorite tools are Indian ink and acrylic, his paintings are narrative due to their essence: one can see face jumbles, science-fiction creatures, totems, eyes, mouths or even birds. His works address themes like death, sexuality and universal myths.
