Born in 1953 - Canada
John Kokkinos is an artist born in Athens, Greece in 1953. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 10 and studied fine arts as part of a special art program at the Central Technical Post Secondary Special.
John Kokkinos is fascinated by wireless communication technologies. In his imagination, everyday communication takes a whole new meaning through size and speed, creating masses of mind blowing patterns, which move around in the air space. His paintings focuses on the air that surrounds us and the implied presence of the marks that communication leaves behind. Popular culture through publicity, interior decoration and television, as well as ancient cultures and repetition of shapes and patterns are his greatest sources of inspiration.
He uses an interesting combination of mediums such as watercolor, acrylic, chalk, ink on rice paper, which allows him to express himself better. The different steps to produce his work result in three dimension creations.
Since 1977, John Kokkinos's work has been presented in several galleries and museums in Canada. His work was rewarded several times during contemporary art fairs.
