Johanne Bilodeau is an artist born in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, she has a studio in the Eastern Townships, in the heart of a small sugar bush. She holds a degree in visual arts from the University of Quebec in Montréal and a degree in modern artistic practices from the University of Sherbrooke, she has worked on her pictorial research for 20 years.
Of high aesthetic quality, the images the emerge from her brush are rich in details. Which are often naturalistic patterns, from a lively mix of Byzantine, Oriental, Victorian, Judeo-Christian, Celtic and Native American cultures. The repettition of these graphic signs gives a meditative dimension to the artist's pictorial work.
In her pictorial research, Johanne Bilodeau deliberately plays with the rules of composition: freely, she breaks the perspectives in favor sometimes of two dimensional plans. as well as in a same space, she even manages to put together the flats and volumes by juxtaposing them poetically. She takes a simple and entertaining insight on the production of humanized landscapes.
Since several years, social ecology has been at the heart of her artistic practice through the preservation and the restauration of natural ecosystems in urban and rural areas. The stories told by her colorful canvases are closely related to our history, that contain some of the major North American natural landscapes.
