Zhang Xiaogang was born in 1958 in Kunming. He is a Chinese contemporary artist, a symbolist surrealist painter. He lives in Sichuan and in Beijing.
Zhan Xiaogang is famous for his series of stylish and often monochromatic (white and black)portraits of Chinese families called "Bloodline". The poses used in his work are reminiscent of both the Chinese tradition of family portraits during the cultural revolution and the compositions of European surrealism. Critics have proclaimed his paintings as "the portraits of the modern Chinese soul"
