Liu Chongwei

Born in 1970, Liu Chongwei is a Chinese artist who graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Lu Xun in 1996. A real protean artist, who has several professions: director of the department of fine arts at the International University of Dalian, editor of the Beijing Youth Daily, director of the Dalian association of artist. He started his career by working with the subversive group "Post Sense Sensibility".

He explores several fields: video, installation, drawing, sculpture and painting...... the artist describes his work as impulsive and intuitive.The Saatchi gallery has described his work as " A feeling of excess, corruption and aggression which reflects the cultural aggression". Belonging to the "Post Sense Sensibility" movement, the artist breaks with political idealism to adopt irrational, intuitive, improvisational, propices to extreme experiences. He approaches the ideas of corruption, alienation or the verticality of the infrastructure of a megalopolis. His work is influenced by the city under construction (influenced by China) but his city remains historical. For him the city, is in perpectual deconstruction, and has the capacity to "numb" and to crush us. He point out the consumerism of our modern society, by adding objects that make reference to the luxury of a capitalist society. " We can only survive in the chaos of the present" says the artist.

Liu Chongwei is one of the most popular artisst of the moment. His pieces have already been exhibited all around the world, including at the Pompidou Center...... He has done more than 20 works including art books and magazines of contemporary art.
