Josef Bolf

Born in 1971 - Czech Republic

BIOGRAPHY

Josef Bolf was born in 1971 in Prague where he now lives and works.

He is considered to be an important element of a generation of artists whose work emerged at the beginning of the 21st century. His generation was the first not to be under the control of Communist censorship as well as to have connections with foreign and western artistic scenes. Josef Bolf works in collaboration with artists Šerých, Ján Man?uška and Tomáš Vanek with whom he created the artist group BJ (Bezhlavý jezdec/The Headless Knight).

His work revolves around childhood, his memories and the surrounding gloom which took over between 1968 with the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution in 1989, a period known as the Normalization period, characterized by the restoration of "Communist norms".

In 2010, he was voted best Czech artist of the year and his work figured in individual and collective exhibits in China, Germany, Portugal, France, Hungary, Sweden, USA and Czech Republic.
