Gérard Alary

Born in 1945 - France

Gerard Alary is a French artist born in 1945. He lives and works in Ivry-sur-Seine. He graduated from the Beaux-Arts in Paris, and is teaching at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Art in Dijon, France.

Careless about belonging to formal trends, an artist of his time, Alary is a painter who struggles with his own idiosyncrasies. And the proof is that he is easily recognizable. He has his way of approaching the painting, vertically or horizontally, through successive layers of pigments and liquid, almost boiling matter, that he applies, spreads, outlines and highlights on the canvas.

The powerful image is born, arises fro the magma of flows and streams that mix together and finally settle, strong and full of significations when the artist finally decides that the gesture has met the expected image. Success or failure ensues, along with accidents and diversions inherent to the creative process.

Alary claims his voice, his fears and anxieties, his secrets desires and hopes through his art, deaf to complacency. His art is direct, rough, it troubles us and makes us dizzy. His paintings speak about life and death, there is nothing anecdotic in them, their dripping are tears, we might see our lives in them.
