Presentation

Olivier Cardin grew up in a working-class district of the 20th arrondissement, in Paris in the 1970s. It was in 1971 that he first encountered the art of Vincent Van Gogh, during an exhibition at the Musée de l'Orangerie. and decides, like Van Gogh, to paint. His portraits are inspired by those of Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine and Francis Bacon, but feature characters from his childhood. Those he met in the neighborhood where he grew up, to which he had become attached, at a time when, little frugal with games, he unwittingly developed a good sense of observation. In his colorful portraits, the imagination injects itself into the memory to represent subjective images on which he fixes his gaze. Painting has a curative effect on him which has enabled him to overcome difficult moments. He defines himself as "a troubadour, a minstrel of painting, an introverted dauber".
