Maurice Renoma

Born in 1940 - France

Maurice Renoma is a renowned French stylist, photographer and designer. 2013 marked Renoma’s 50th anniversary of his Parisian boutique, White House, which opened in 1963 and has catered to icons such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Karl Lagerfeld, and Eric Clapton. In the fashion world, Renoma’s designs were heralded as one of the centerpieces of the Yé-yé movement – the sensual style of pop music most notably associated with Serge Gainsbourg, a loyal friend and customer.

Although Renoma is well known for his significant influence on the fashion industry, in the early 1990s he became increasingly interested in photography. For Renoma, everything is an art form — fashion, the human body, and photography merge to create his hybrid works. These iconic photographs present the unpredictable, the provocative and the insane. He manipulates his photographs to create images of humans with animal heads, outrageous depictions of half male/half female humans in every day life, and unexpected nudes eliciting unpredictable and often dramatic reactions from viewers.

In 1999, Renoma’s collection of photographs were published in his debut book entitled “Maurice Renoma: Modographe” (“fashionographer”). In 2013, in conjunction with his 50th anniverserary, Renoma has released a new book titled “One + One = Three”; which focuses on the story of his life and the influence he’s had on modern culture.

Maurice Renoma’s work is intriguing because it takes the art of photography – supposedly the most honest and realistic medium there is – and turns it on its head. He breaks apart, composes and plays with his images until they are completely unreal and absurd creations. The public, press and critics agree that Renoma’s work is not only aesthetically pleasing, but conceptually brilliant and impeccably executed.
