Presentation

Born on 1 February 1945 in Paris, Patrick Bailly-Maitre-Grand pursued his scientific studies (diploma in Physical Sciences in 1969) and devoted ten years of his career to painting; after these experiences, he started to take photographs.

His works, strictly analog, black & white silver prints, are characterized by a playful imagination, associated with a taste for complex technologies such as the daguerreotype, the periphotography, strobophotography, chemical prcesses, direct monotypes, rayogrammes and other inventions of his own (see glossary). Avoiding the concept of perspective, his images, although very sophisticated and elaborate, have the simplification of visual proverbs and are as simple as haikus.

For 25 years, Patrick Bailly-Maitre -Grand has been showing his works in the entire world. His works are in the collections of prestigious museums (MoMA, New York, Pompidou Center, Paris, FNAC, Sainsbury Center, Norwich, Victoria Museum, Melbourne etc.).

In the work of Patrick Bailly-Maitre-Grand, the photographic illusion is in balance between the scientific and technological rigor and an aesthetic full of poetry. His imagination seems to have no limits but got rid of decorative or realistic details that don?t inspire us to dream.
