Born in 1930 - France
Jean-Paul Barray started his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon in 1947 and had his first show at the Galerie Grange the same year. He moved to Paris in 1952 and started several collaborations with architects (Le Corbusier, André Wogenscky in 1956) and then with Technès, an industrial design agency where he worked with Roger Tallon (starting in 1958).
Jean-Paul Barray's professional career is linked to design and to creations applied to industry or architecture. The construction of his paintings, always perfectly centered and balanced, is in direct relation with the design and the idea of a practical application. An Artistic Engineer (he works for César), he also paints in his studio where he also lives. Yves Klein works in Jean-Paul Barray's studio from time to time. Invited at the first Paris Biennial in 58, his work draw the attention of Pierre Soulages, he meets François Arnal and other artists of the French abstract movement.
From the '70s to the '90s, he paints and in parallel pursues his career as an Artistic Engineercollaborating with César or Edouard Albert. In 1962, he shows his work at the 18th Salon de mai, and makes the same year wall decorations for Aquitaine-Organico, Solétanche, Corona... In 1967, in collaboration with Kim Moltzer, he designs a chair, a table and a lamp. These works have been acquired by the Center Pompidou. In 1969 Jean-Paul Barray opens his own design agency. He later joins the Atelier A. In 1980, his works are acquired by the French institution Fond National d’art contemporain.
In 1982, when the famous design school ENSCI is created, he is offered a teaching position there by jean prouvé. Jean-Paul Barray continued to paint until the end of his life, in 2012.
