Presentation

Born in 1973 in Rouen, plastic and video artist Guillaume Montier has been exhibiting his work since 1994. Guillaume Montier likes to produce series and alternates improvisaton and questioning notions such as teh existence, void or plenitude.

From his series "Les Tragédies", focusing on chairs as objects connected to life and death, he declares: "Every tragedy is defined by the preseverence of the subject to dissolve implacably in an inferno that they invoked through their wishes. Thus, chairs are only inhabited by the potentiality of the event: to sit or to stand up. Only these two instants can claim to contain the living. Everything else is just void."

Under his brush, the chair, sober and depicted in a simple environment, loses its hospitability to transform itself from an object of rest to a temptation of abandon, renunciation and loss. Guillaume Montier creates philosophical paintings built on the contradictions between action and thought, movement and passivity.
