Born in 1991 - France
Emilie Abou was born in France in 1991. She lives in Paris where she studies fine arts at the Ecole de Condé in the 15th arrondissement.
This is how she presents her work:
"We can shout, speak or write to express ourselves; I have chosen to make art.
After trying to study fashion design, I decided to return to my first passion: drawing. I therefore joined, the following year, the illustration and fine art cycle at the Ecole de Condé. I knew I had made the right choice and that I could develop my practice.
The questioning around the body began during my fashion design studies. Its curves, its uneven surface, its imperfections, these are faults that we find in it and that I wish to highlight, not hide. I have an attraction towards beings with misshapen and singular physical characteristics. Unhealthy curiosity? No, just fascination.
I love the bodies that are marked by time, the excesses of life, the disintegration when facing death rather than pretty facial traits. Many paths open, the research becomes more analytical. I care for the skin and its diseases.
I try to capture the essential and to express "the universal" through a different and disturbing beauty. I am interested in turning the viewers towards their own strangeness, our "dual nature".
All my work comes from these impulses of the moment, I engage my body and those that I want to manipulate. I develop a style that is searching for something, is observed, that allows me to experiment."
