Philippe Rivemale

Born in 1947 - France

Philippe Rivemale was born in Paris in 1947. Today he lives and works in Piffonds (Yonne).

In 1966, he studied engraving with Jean Clerté, then joined the École Estienne until 1969. He stayed in the US several times between 1969 and 1974, where he had the opportunity to explore the American counter culture in visual arts. He moved back to France in 1974.

Philippe Rivemale exhibits his work since 1978 in France and abroad: Musée d'Argonne – orangerie des Musées de Sens – Paris – Lyon – Nice – AGART Amilly – Brussels – Mexico City – Basel – Ghent... Public collections: FNAC Paris, Arthothèque de Lyon, Arthothèque Auxerre.

Philippe Rivemale's large format paintings are based on the collage of various graphic ellements that provoke dramatic scale contrasts between lines and shapes, some of them biomorphic, others figurative, as well as constrasts in dimensions (natural landscapes, the cosmos, urban landscapes, figures, objects...).

In this explosion of shapes and subjects, we can distinguish several layers coming from his biography, from cultural or social references: comics can be found close to still lifes, great masters landscapes, the US of the '60s and '70s. Philippe Rivemale's canvases become a nod to our ideologies and our myths, reflections upon the sense of things and our relationship with them.

The finished canvas is neither abstract nor figurative in the sense of "readable" elements, but it creates a jubilatory universe where the eye can wander, smile or meditate. The order and chaos in his works submerge the viewer in a vertiginous space, a divine chaos.
