Jean Prouvé was a French self-taught architect and designer (Paris, 1901 - Nancy, 1984).

Jean Prouvé was trained as a metal worker in 1916. He opened a workshop in Nancy in 1924 and had his first commission in 1926. In 1931 he opened a furniture design and architecture firm. After the war, he moved his workshop in the suburbs as he needed more space.

In 1950 he accepted a commission from the Ministery of Reconstruction for industrial housing in Meudon. His business didn't make much profit and he was evicted from the workshop space in 1953. He started a new business in 1954 with Michel Bataille afterreceiving a commission for the studend residence Jean Zay.

Contracted by the CMIT's Construction department, he does research and produces a light façade. He left the CMIT in 1966 and opened a new firm. He was chairman of the Applied Arts at the Conservatoire de Paris between 1957 and 1970. He experimented and inovated in the field of design throughout his career.
