Ode Bertrand is a French artist born in 1930 in Paris, where she lives and works today.
"Bring chaos into order" is Ode Bertrand's statement. For 35 years, she has been apprentice and assistant to the famous artist Aurelie Nemours, who was also her aunt.
Ode Bertrand's practice also revolves around Concrete Art and Geometric Abstraction, like her teacher's, but her focus is on the line, a real leitmotif in her work. She uses the line as sign, but also to structure and compose geometrical figures built in relation to the golden ratio.
Her works, grouped in series, are essentially in black and white, with some explorations of color. However, the lines and a certain pictorial density give her paintings, clean and simple at first sight, a profound vibration.
Ode Bertrand always starts by drawing a grid of straight lines on canvas, over which she applies black touches that give shape and rhythm to the composition and create formal and chromatic tension.
Ode Bertrand's works have been exhibited in numerous museums such as Musée de Sens in 2010, Musée Matisse in 2006, and Musée de Cambrai in 2004. Her works are also part of the permanent collections of the Casaletta Museum in Sardinia, the Tome Museum in Japan, the Bonn Museum in Germany, Musée de Mâcon and Centre Pompidou in Paris.
