Campana-Haas

Dominique Campana born in 1968, lives and works in Calvi, Corsica.

Carol Haas born in 1965, lives and works in Calvi, Corsica.

Fusion is the magic word for these sculptors.

First because of glass since Dominique Campana excels in the manipulation of this material. He comes from a glassmaking family and mastered the art by the age of 14. Then comes metal because in order to artistically evolve this second medium came into play and Dominique’s dexterity made it easy to learn.

Both master craftsman and the work of a visual artist.

Carol Haas grew up with art. At a young age she began drawing lessons at the Art Students League of New York and the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Then she continued academically in studio art, studying with the American painter Walter Hatke at Union College, Schenectady, NY from where she earned a Bachelor of Arts.

Fusion of two talents together in their joint participation in a long creative process, from a sketch of an idea through building a model and the realization of a sculpture.

The choices, the model, the size, the colors are all decided upon before the making process begins but evolve with the glass elements which most often act as guide through form and color effects. Sculptures are built with metal. The complex transformation process of this medium anticipates the details specific to a model in order to achieve an effect, smooth or irregular, with a certain control, and the sculpture is clad with its definitive appearance in the finishing phase and the scrupulous application of color.

Fusion of bold expression and courage of the two artists bringing sculpture to its highest level, that which pushes the limits of the media and their interaction, resulting in a harmony from a narrative of force.

And finally fusion of reality and a playful fantasy, incisive and marvellous, giving the work, beings, insects and animals, their rightful place. An overlooked surprise that life reserves left aside in the daily routine.
