Born in 1946 - France
Jean-Claude Fitoussi alias Zafi comes from a family of 11 children ; his youth was marked by a few years in a correctional facility. It was during these sad years that he felt the urge to paint, from a profound desire to express himself, to bring out his feelings.
He started working construction jobs. When he turned 18 he got out, convinced that painting was his desire... It is only at the beginning of 2000 that he started to paint. His pseudonym, Zafi, is a tribute to his mother. Self-taught, he learned to handle the brush, control the colors, shapes, and it was only some years later that his painting acquired a mature, readable style that continues to evolve.
Zafi paints as he thinks, tries things again and again until he is happy with the result. He deosn't take on a clear identity, he paints portraits, landscapes, everyday scenes, still lifes ; his brushstrokes are broad, and his works come from his deepest thoughts. Zafi control colors with finesse, he is a genuine artist who exhibits his works seldom.
