Presentation

Valentine Schlegel is a French ceramist born in 1925 in Sète.

She discovered very soon the secrets of craftsmanship and the pleasure of manipulating different materials with her father who was himself a carpenter and let her wonder around his studio freely.

In 1942, she entered the School of Fine Arts of Montpellier. Valentine Schlegel seemed to have found her vocation and just some weeks after she entered the school, she passed to 4 year.

At age 20, she decided to dedicate to ceramics and left to Paris. Afterwards, in 1956, she became a teacher and taught at the Museum of Decorative Arts.

She uses soil as well as plaster to create her sculptures, which she recovers later on with an enamel, this way the artist acquired a total mastery of this materials. Her pieces are directly inspired by nature, using the shape of a tree or of other imaginary plants. They emerge from a single block, abruptly, but being nevertheless a summary of sophistication.

This balance in volumes and forms built a reputation for the artist in the 50s.
