Presentation

Elisabeth Joulia (1925-2003) was a French ceramicist, pionner of artistic renewal of ceramics during the 50s.

She started her studies of art at the School of Fine Arts of Clermont Ferrand at the end of the war, her studies led her to Paris to study painting, sculpture and fresco. But it was not until she joined the School of Fine Arts of Bourges that she started working with ceramics with professor Jean Lerat as her teacher, who passed her on his passion for working with clay.

Driven by her fascination for sandstone, Elisabeth Joulia finally settled in Borne, a city famous for its pottery tradition, where she led an austere life. Strongly inspired by nature, she created sculptures and pieces cooked in wood fire in a refined and elegant style.
