Born in 1964 - France
Born in 1964 in the Parisian suburbs, Jean-Manuel Simoes had a normal school education, not exceptionally brilliant or particularly bad. He acquired a level of advanced education in international business.
At the end of his studies he entered the business world. However some ten years later, he decided to move on from this environment, encouraged by his wife. It is his wife, when he was 33 years old, that really gave him courage and desire to start what he really liked: photography.
Since 1998, Jean-Manuel dedicates his energy in this medium, even if it is not always easy.
As a beginner in photojournalism, Jean-Manuel Simoes collaborated with a great number of prestigious newspapers as Le Monde, Le Figaro, L’Express or even Telerama. In his work he decided to photography in a simple and close manner the essential things that are people, life and time passing.
This approach led him to many awards; among the Special Prize of the Jury in Angers; prestigious publications within the portfolios of different newspapers as LeMonde2, Le Monde.fr or even L’Express. The larger international festival of photo journalism Visa pour l’Image welcomed his work and famous collections as the National Library of France or the National Monument Center have acquired some of his artworks.
His relationship to photography is based on his attachment to paper, its tangible nobility and to manual work. For the artist the print is the decisive and essential part of the culmination of his work.
Among his outstanding works we can talk about the report on the Parisian ring road; awarded in Angers; realized in 2005. But also “Chiens de la Casse”, real photographic report, told with passion. Here the spectator finds himself with a unique strength in the intimacy of the life in the suburbs, with a great fineness, far from the clichés.
