Presentation

Jean-Pierre Schneider was born in Paris in 1946, and he lives and works in Paris.

Having studied at the Beaux-Arts School in Lille, his practice was marked by abstract painting, or painting "without a subject", as he prefers to call it.

Based on his experience with the abstract, inspired by the work of artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Mark Rothko, Tal-Coat, Cy Twombly, Jean-Pierre Schneider went back to the subject 15 years ago; the subject is the element that "gives the dynamic of the painting" without taking it over, and his main preoccupation is "the territory of the painting".

His paintings are realized in series that explore, through the same subject, various visual compositions.

His paintings offer a rich, matte and vibrant material, that reveals all its subtlety in natural light. The artist adds layers of paint, cuts the material with signs, inscriptions of words or dates, and the first layer reappers to surface through these cuts.
