Born on March 26, 1954, Étienne Viard is a French sculptor and ceramic artist.
He first works with ceramics, but his complex and strong personality drive him to confront a more rough and resistant material, the steel.
Each artwork needs a long preparatory process that needs sketching, cuts, and models.
The steel bars and sheets are cut, modeled and bent in cold-form with incredible precision. The tension of the metal reaches sometimes the limit of possibility. A formal danger, but also a real one, characterizes the artwork.
His sculpture is obvious and it follows the lineage of conceptual artists such as Carl André or Anthony Caro; it tries to establish some harmony or to mess with spatial order.
His sculptures have no basis, they stand on the ground, and they are sensitive variations grouped in ?families? of forests, profiles, blades?
Vertical lines are predominant, they are strong and supple and they evoke the vegetal world. They let the light in to punctuate and underline the volumes opening up the space in a horizontal direction. The masses are always at the limit of balance.
