Presentation

The designer, painter and engraver Christian Fossier was born in 1943 in Paris. His dark and enigmatic work has been exhibited at the Galerie Maegh, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Center Georges Pompidou as well as the Tokyo and Venice Biennials. He taught at the Ecole Supérieure d'Art in Metz then at the engraving workshop of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Master of engraving, he exploits this discipline in depth. His Saturnian works are invaded by black, a color that fascinates the artist with its intensity. He applies it to subjects with curved and sensual lines. His pastel work also presents us with the quintessence of anguish: the outlines cling to the canvas to blend into more blurred areas. At the end of the 1980s, he represented more and more landscapes, notably in the Terrain series. Always very dark, some parts evoke the human body. His work is very mysterious and sometimes, only the titles can guide us ("Marriage", "Balaclava" ...). He took his secret with him when he died in 2013, but left behind a large quantity of works.
