biography under completion
Diana QUINBY was born in 1967 in Manhattan. She lives and works in Paris.
She is a graphic media artist working in drawing, lithography and intaglio printing.
When pregnant with her second child in 2005, she began to draw larger than life-size self-portraits, using neither mirrors nor reference photographs. Following these pregnancy drawings, she has continued to explore portraiture and the nude body in order to reveal emotional readings concerning femininity, masculinity, sexuality and aging. In her large portraits of teenagers, the rendering of clothing gives life to the body.
Her drawings can be linked to a new found interest in figurative art, but her work is in no way hyper-realistic: the proportions are distorted and the anatomical details are invented. She isn’t interested in reproducing the body as she sees it, but in probing and reinventing it through the use of line. Working exclusively in black and white allows her to draw out the essential, to explore both visual reality and the imagination.
