Born in 1952 - France
Poetry is a force for resisting conditioning, and our finitude.
Sometimes its incantation offers an image to us…
Marie Meulien lives and works in Drôme Provençale. Poetry has always been her main form of expression. Trained in communication, specialising in the arts and graphics industries, for thirty years she has worked in consulting and publishing. Since 2012 she has devoted herself to her creativity. Her photography now accompanies her writing: in the same breath, without either one illustrating the other. Besides her "on wall" exhibitions, each project is embodied in an self-published artist's book.
Whether it is to return a poetic "stirring", or to denounce the barbarity of man, her words form part of a revitalised and humanist vision of the world. At the heart of her works: the prodigious capacity for the regeneration of plant life, and poetry as a force to resist our conditioning and our finitude. Beyond the technical inventions of man, and the chaos he creates, one is free to make of his regard a support for hope, and for action.
Her first work, The dry and the sap, celebrates her encounter with "primary" rainforest: a decisive encounter, almost mystical, which is the source of her desire to photograph. "The forest looks at me. It offers me images... Ineffable experience, so foreign to matters of form. Must it be said? Must it be shown?"… Imbued with joy, the photographs of this abstract series stand at the edge of calligraphic gesture.
In Presbyterian Church, created in the Andaman Islands, the forest is reclaiming an island which, under British rule, was built according to the ultimate in Western comfort and sophistication... Or how the indecent splendour of this nineteenth century city, hosting the world's largest political prison of its time, is sinking into oblivion. This collection is dedicated to the memory of prisoners of the Cellular Jail.
