Jean-Gabriel Barthélémy

Born in 1952 - France

Jean-Gabriel Barthelemy was born in Paris in 1952.

The Gursky exhibition at Centre Pompidou changed Barthelemy's life. He felt a visual shock when he was in front of Gursky's gigantic prints. Barthelemy was a Photojournalist/paparazzi for Agence Sipa, later became an enthusiast for large format photography and decided to work in the photographic chamber.

He bought a Sinar camera with an XL Schneider optical and a 20 X 25 frame, that is to say 50 times the size of films that he used, to capture Princess Caroline or Princess Diana.
He buried himself in books and experimented with the camera until he became an expert.

He realized a series on the 400 blocks of estate buildings in La Courneuve (Parisian suburbs). These works were subjected to many exhibitions and institutional acquisitions.

In 2006, he dedicated himself to Versailles with his equipment and got the permission to freely photograph the less famous spots.

He worked with natural light, with 2 frames per capture and an interval time which meant two and a half hours, therefore it took him four months to take about 80 photographs.
