Presentation

André Even (1918-1997) the artist is originally from Pont Aven. His childhood is punctuated with artistic encounters, these opened many doors towards the universe of painting. The artist strives to maintain two commitments, an artistic one and another one which belongs to air and sea. Through this and at the dawn of the Second World War, he joined Cherbourg.

Following the 1940 withdrawal, André Even joined various religious circles and came across Monseigneur Lefèbre à Mortain. The latter convinced him to evolve his technical prowess for drawing. This is why the artist began taking lessons at the Beaux Arts Paris, in Mauris Denis's studio. This is where he did painting mural restorations for French churches and cathedrals, which were pulled to pieces during the war. But religious painting wasn't his favorite sector, André Evan's art blooms with rustic landscapes, which beguiled his childhood. The riverbanks of Aven and Belon are his muses. He's also inspired by Paris, due to its urban landscapes. His masters are primitive Quattrocento painters, though with some influence from Flemish and Italian primitive painting. However, his perception completely changed when he came across works of Cezanne, Van Gogh et Daubigny: art goes beyond a simple formal translation.

His spread out fields follow a synthetic and rigorous outline. The artist creates his paintings around adroitly calculate proportions.

The artist is the creator of monuments which belong to history, like the ceramic frescoes, that decorate the old train station of Pont-Aven.
