Born in 1951 - Germany
Born in 1951 in Neuenhain, Elvira Bach is a German painter. She lives and works in Berlin.
She studied glass at Staatlcihe Glasfachschule Hadamar and visual arts at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. She worked as a prop artist and prompter for the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer theater, for almost ten years.
In 1982, she was the first woman invited to participate at the Documenta de Kassel. During the same year, she joined the artist residency of Saint Dominique in Dominican Republic. A little later, she moved to Senegal for a while, where she got married and had two children.
In addition to painting and glass work, the artist also makes bronze sculptures in large formats.
Elvira Bach's paintings and works on paper explore domestic and public environments, expressing much about her persona and lifestyle. Her vigorous statement of femininity is illustrated through depicted figures frequently wearing heels that merge with the body like a new limb.
Her poses, vaguely totemic and primitive in appearance are painted in bright colours and energetic strokes. These trademarks led her becoming key member of the German art movement "die jungen Wilden, the Young Wild Ones", famous for artistic currents, Expressionism and Fauvism. After her invitation to the Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, Bach broke away from the group, continuing to paint in her angular and energetic style. Femmes Fatales engaged in household and mother duties are recurring themes in Bach's painterly vocabulary and can be observed in "Spargelschaelerin" and Eine Kuechendiva". Her entertaining portraits are filled with her own alter egos, in various postures and colours, typical for her artistic approach.
