biography under completion

A German artist based in Berlin, Julia Christe has always considered herself a photographer. Upon leaving school, and unsure how to reach this vision, she presented her photographs to the GH-University in Essen, where she was accepted despite the limited number of places. Christe took a sabbatical from her education to travel from Alaska to Florida on a motorcycle, a journey that would later influence her work. At the end of her studies she moved to Berlin, where she focused on editorial and commercial work. An art director encouraged her to show her portfolio, and Christe quickly found an agent and assignments from magazines. Her work on dogs, which have become her signature subject, debuted with the series “Ups and Downs” in which she photographed dogs while in mid air. From this work she has gone on to be recognized as a talented photographer of dogs, and received commissions from magazines and dog owners alike.

Christe is also interested in landscape photography, a practice that she first explored during her year traveling America. While there she marked the landscapes that she would later return to photograph which can be seen in images from the series “Meeting Point”, where a figure wearing an immense sombrero walks through an almost surrealist landscape. A perfectionist to the soul, she plans her images to every last detail. She knows exactly where she is going, marking landscapes, choosing the light, staging the scene, and works until she obtains her vision.

The series exhibited at VOZ'Galerie, “Bestiaire”, focuses on Faith, a female greyhound, a former racing dog who was truly a star in her field. An animal so exceptional, Christe chose to put this expressiveness that she saw in a series of portraits. Responding to a commission for a magazine cover, Christe, seeing the hood that her owner put on her to protect her ears, chose to capture the fragility and the humanity that degraded the animal. It's this sentiment that gives all its sense to the privileged relationship that she maintains with the dogs she photographs, and leads her to want to go further in her portraits. After this initial commission, Christe decided to carry out a series based on the animal and organised a new session with some fifty dogs that the owner had, and with this the series was born.
