Born in 1968 - Germany
Knut Eckstein was born in Hesse, in Germany, in 1968; she lives and works in Berlin. Knut Eckstein studied at the Hunter-College in New York with Robert Morris (1996-98). He had studied previously at the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen (Germany).
An important resource for the Knut Eckstein's work - be it plastic or photography - is the built environment. With so-called "poor", found materials, the artist creates stacked works from minimal resources, yet stable in themselves and tied together. The aesthetics of the materials used, their colors, the lettering, emblems and logos also contribute to the result - conglomerates of color, shapes and volumes, wearing a new reference system in itself.
On the one hand, there is the consumer society with its packaging materials and advertising, on the other hand there is reflexion on art itself. The architecture of the so-called International Style, such as Le Corbusier, but also the constructivism of the early 20th century, or the heritage of de Stijl with artists such as Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg are his sources of inspiration.
In recent years gestural painting reminding of Jackson Pollock has taken an important role in his works. Splashes of color are structuring the surfaces of the objects he creates and add an irrational element to his works, and their seemingly rational construction and linear geometry.
