Presentation

Roswitha Hecke was born in 1944 in Hambourg, Germany. The daugther of a teacher, she discovered photography when she was a teenager and wanted to make it her career.

After her studies, she met director Peter Zadek and felt in love with him. They stayed together during seven years. During their relationship, she only photographed Zadeck's theater productions.
She then made numerous shootings in the world of cinema. She photographed celebrities such as Werner Schroeter, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Eric Rohmer in Paris.
A real "modern nomad" as she likes calling herself, Roswitha Hecke traveled throughout several countries such as France, Spain, India, Turkey, Mexico, The United States and Peru. She lived in a tent in Morroco for three years.
In 2002, she settled in Saint-Petersboug where she taught photography at the Academy of Fine Arts.

Roswitha Hecke started working in photojournalism in the 70s, and started trying color photography in this same period.

Roswitha Hecke is known for her stagings of foreign countries and cities, for her black and white photographs, for her portraits of celebrities but also for her pictures of the marginalized such as transvestites, postitutes or homeless.
The impartiality of her pictures reflects the deep respect she has toward her models, of whom she never takes away their dignity.

Several German magazines such as Stern, Vogue, Twen, Theater Heute, Playboy, Die Ziet and Spiegel have published her pictures.
In 1979, she won the Kodak Prize for her work LoveLife: Scenes with Irene, a prostitute from Zurich. In 1982, The German foundation Stiftung Buchkunst rewarded this same photobook with the prize of most beautiful book. The latter has been published in Noway, Japan and the United States.
