Born in 1951 - Greece
Kalliopi Lemos was born in 1951 in the Inousses islands (Greece). She is a painter, sculptor and installation artist. Kalliopi Lemos studied painting and impression at the Byam Shaw School of Art Saint Martins (University of Arts London) where she did her bachelors.
She also studied traditional Japanese art in floral composition, Ikebana for 15 years. Kalliopi collects several types of architecture books. She lives and works in London, in the studio of her garden.
She traveled to Japan several times and developed a passion for design "Everything is reduced to the essential" she says. "I always loved simplicity and its balance". The unique environment, buildings and gardens really made an impact on her.
All of Lemos's work are brought alive through feelings. She is inspired by the materials she uses, like reeds, wood and metal. She makes a series of drawings, when her feeling intensifies, she begins her first model. She likes to combine various mediums.
At the beginning of her career, Lemos loved painting but soon turned towards sculpture. She appreciates color but finds three-dimensional work more expressive. She also tries out video, mainly by filming her sculptures. Among the themes she addresses, forced migration is one of them.
Kalliopi Lemos has permanent exhibitions in New York-Perpetual Transitions at the Onassis Cultural Foundation and in Istanbul, Round Voyage at SantralIstanbul (Bilgi University). She received the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection Prize in 2015.
