Sei Matsushita

Born in 1981 - Japan

Sei Matsushita is a Japanese artist who lives and works in Paris. She studied Arts Plastiques at the Université Paris VIII and the École de Beaux-Arts de Versailles. She also got a Bachelor of Multimedia and Chinese language from the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba, Australia. Her work explores the lives of animals in our modern society. The fate of the animals comes out of our choice for a society of mass consumption.

Rabbits usually live in woods and gardens. They embody the double image of the pet like domestic dogs and cats and of farm animals killed for their meat and fur. These two paradoxical images coexist in Sei Matsushita's work and are often concomitantly represented in her paintings.

Rabbits have a strong symbolic meaning in many cultures. And the moon and the rabbit are allegorical representations often associated: their coexistence reflects the cyclical nature of life, the recurrent combination of darkness and light, of death and rebirth. Every month, the moon is swallowed by the darkness before it shines again in all its fullness. Rabbits who are able to survive in the shadow of death are a powerful symbol of this potential revival.

Rabbits move quietly on the ground to munch on green shoots and herbs and leave uncovered in the pale light of dawn and dusk, the thresholds of transition between day and night. Rabbits indicate the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Sei Matsushita wants to express it in her paintings.
