Hin Chua is a Malaysian artist born in 1974, in Kuala Lumpur. The artist grew up in Malaysia, before settling in Australia at the age of 15, he then moved to London where he currently lives and works.
After studying computer science, Hin Chua became a programmer and did not started practicing photography until later on, around 2004-2005, in order to, according to him, avoid " the crisis of turning fifty". The Idea emerged during his long meditative walks and from the though that the landscapes that he was seeing were destined to disappear.
He is particularly known for his project called "After the Fall" which led him to photograph 40 cities in 15 different countries. This project, which lasted more than 3 years, was an exploration of urban environments in transition. The artist wanted to immortalize these spaces which are suspended between nature and culture.
Hin Chua's approach is aesthetic before being ideological.The artist's purpose is not to transmit a message but to capture the moments that he feels are special and evanescent.
His photographs are often decontextualized, which contributes to the look of timelessness that they emanate.
In 2009, Hin Chua won the Magenta Flash Forward Emerging Photographer prize. Hin Chua has exhibited his work in Italy (At the Savignano Sl Festival, in Rimini, 2010), in the UK (at the Format International Photography Festival, in Derby, 2011), in the United States (at the Booksmart Studio, in Rochester, 2009) and in the Netherlands (at the Noorderlicht International Photofestival, in Groningen, 2013).
