Born in 1950 - Morocco
Nicolette Jelen spent her early childhood in post-war Tangier, a city full of abandoned mansions she snuck into to imagine ghosts. Like a haunted house full of shadows and streams of dusty light, her work explores light and dark and all the qualities in between.
Nicolette Jelen graduated with an MFA from Sorbonne University in Paris. She also studied at the Pratt Graphics Center in New York and at the Art Students League of New York.
"Mixed in my work are landscapes of imaginary and real places, tropical visions, forests and glens, Pompeian motifs, baroque angels, with a fascination for light and its description, graphically using ink and paper. My work reflects a concrete yet mystical vision of the Mediterranean and upstate New York."
