Presentation

The painter, sculptor, architect and poet Mathias Goeritz was born in 1915, in Germany. Trained in history and philosophy at Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin, he focused his doctorate on the study of Fine Arts. In 1949, he moved to Mexico after living in Morocco and Spain. He got involved in many cultural projects and met the architect Luis Barragan and Chucho Reyes. He founded the Experimental Museum “El Eco”, and moved towards emotional architecture. He produces a thoughtful art, taking into account the parameters given to him to develop his projects. In Mexico, for example, he created monumental sculptures, proportioned to the size of the squares. His large geometric sculptures in bright colors blur the boundaries between object and space, thus provoking a strong emotional intensity. They fit perfectly with the large spaces that it finds in Mexico, a welcoming land where it flourishes. Dadaism, minimalism and expressionism are three movements that influence his work. Moreover, he did not seek to assimilate into it but promoted an anonymous and collective art.
