Presentation

Agata Kus (PL), born 1987 in Krosno. Graduate and doctoral (PhD) student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (MFA in Leszek Misiak’s studio, 2012). She works as an assistant at Paulina Olowska’s private studio.

She mostly works with painting, drawing and video. The laureate and the finalist of many awards and scholarships, among others: WRO 2015 Award at the WRO Media Art Biennale Test Exposure, Grand Prix in "Fresh Blood" Young Art Review. Her works are part of many private and museums collections (Museum of Contemporary Art In Kraków, WRO Center, Wroclaw) and were shown during many exhibitions and fairs in Poland and abroad (France, Austria).

In her paintings, Agata Kus tries to use many different techniques and forms, experimenting with technology and tools. She builds paintings from scraps, links pictures, topics and contexts, trying to find new values. Like in a collage technique, some of painted areas are often cut off, ended up with sharp edges, painted separately or on different layers.

The artist uses a wide range of means of expression, from realistic, figurative way of painting, to experiments with unusual materials (tape, layers of foil, burned cigarettes holes). She also uses a repetition of certain characteristic elements which she finds important or with a special meaning (fox fur, recognizable characters, specific forms, shapes or words, similar way of putting paint). In her series of paintings named Ashtrays, she burns painting's surface with cigarettes, hurting her painted characters, making those young girls and boys cry with flaming tears. She focuses on the dark side of relationships, mental injuries, wounds, depression, self-destruction, the death drive. Made in different media, all works connect some kind of silent protest, mystery, longing or desire.

Apart from her own materials, she uses found footages. Inspired not only by pictures, chosen film stills, newspaper clippings, archival photographs, but also stories and poetic texts, her pieces are sometimes enriched by adding the ironic text, blured on the wet paint.
