Born in 1943 - Poland
Edward Dwurnik is a Polish artist, born in 1953.
He studied at the Painting academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1963 and changed gears 3 years later and turned towards sculpture.
Although he tried sculpture, his favorite mediums are painting, drawing and graphics. An extremely prolific artist, Edward Dwurnik produced nearly 3,500 paintings and 10,000 drawings in his career. His pictorial compositions are enormous when the artist works in public spaces.
A reputation of being unstable, unpredictable and provocative, Edward Dwurnik tackles sensitive and powerful issues to do with history or politics. He painted many portraits from the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, and seascapes without any horizons as well. His technique is defined by a painting with rapid strokes. Each of his creations stand out due to their bright colors, which attract the eye.
Considered as one of the great figures of contemporary Polish art, Edward Dwurnik has been rewarded several times. He won the committee award of independent culture « Solidarité » in 1983, he participated in the Nouvelle Biennale de Paris in 1995 and obtained the Prix de la Fondation Coutts for contemporary art in 1992. His participation in « documenta 7 », exhibition in Kassel in 1982, which opened the debate on contemporary creation in Poland, was also one of the greatest stepping stones in his search for notoriety.
Today, his work is present in several private and public collections. From Austria to Holland, not to mention Belgium and Finland.
