Born in 1980 - Senegal
Born in 1980, Mactar Khaly grew up in Dakar. Influenced by its history and its natural environment, the self-taught artist revives the traditional Dogon society in his oil painting.
Following the footsteps of his ancestors, Mactar explores matter, transforms it and depicts all the richness of the African soul, its colors and its culture, in each of his paintings dried under Senegal's sun. An Ironworker, at the age of 14, Mactar Khaly discovered painting when he settled, on the small island of N'Gor in front of Dakar, in 2000, an island that has a large artistic community, it is there where he is introduced to painting by a French painter.
Even if his style evolves over time, his African influences are found throughout all of his work, mixing warm colours and simple expressions. Handling with accuracy and dexterity his knife, his brush, his fingers become one with the pigments of his canvas, his oil painting inhales the sun.
