Ryan Hewett, born in 1979 in South Africa, creates unique portraits which aim to explore interiority.
Initially using precise movements, his brush strokes soon develop into something more flexible and spontaneous. Superposed, colourful layers create dynamism and supply the work with energy. Facial movements are sometimes created using a scraper, as if the emotions were shifting before our eyes, in an almost futuristic way.
He paints quickly to create a raw feel, toning down and refining the details afterwards for a blurry effect in some places and a precise finish in others. His favoured cold shades sometimes give these portraits a disturbing feel, despite their aesthetic composition, influenced by abstract art and word painting.
