Born in 1959, Mario A. has Italian and German nationalities. He has a degree in art from the Free University of Berlin, He currently lives between Berlin and Tokyo.
In his photographs, he focuses mainly on Japan, he displays his affection for Japanese aesthetics for its perfect surfaces and its smooth presentation. His collection of works, over a period of a year, is a medidation obout the great beauty of women, especially Japanese women. The beauty that they emanate is that of passivity and artifice, between concern and provocation. This view disconcerts and challenges the expectations and the prototypes of women in diverse societies. Identity is also one of the recurrent subjects of his work, it comprises the "burden" from his Italian and German heritage (nurturing Fascism), while desiring to move forward and embrace the present and the future. In addition to his photographic work, he is the author of videos and performances.
Mario A. declared "I always wanted to create a Japanese doll that I can see in the picturesque... I wanted to approach dualities such as attraction-repulsion, reality-unreality, icon-fixation".
He is internationally recognized, as it has been reflected in his different exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tokyo ("Doll of Innocence" in 2004), in fairs (FIAC) and in Japanese and German Galleries.
