Tsai & Yoshikawa

Born in 1980 - Taiwan

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2006, Tsai and Yoshikawa have worked collaboratively on large-scale projects and commissions, as well as their signature suspended ‘Pop Bloom’ sculptures. Tsai and Yoshikawa met at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 2000. After gaining BA degrees in 2004, they continued their studies at the RCA, graduating with a Masters of Art in Mixed-media textiles, and Sculpture respectively.

Tsai and Yoshikawa?s different creative histories richly combine in their joint practice to provide forward thinking ideas. Individually their practices draw many parallels; both artists are experts in bold use of colour, pattern, form and structure. The duo design and produce unique sculptures and art installations, which are meticulous crafted and have intricate detail. Utilising unusual materials including neoprene foam and light-sources, the artists produce highly colourful sculptures and forms that reference botanical, jungle-like forms. These vibrant hybrids have an otherworldly quality that transcends its environment and alludes to a utopian/dystopian concept.

Tsai and Yoshikawa?s work is often celebrative, offering a dramatic visual impact to their locations. Their shared interest in modern materials and constantly exploring new methods of manipulation make their work truly innovative and contemporary. The artists transform these landscapes with their utopian vision but often reference the local history and identity of the site. Tsai & Yoshikawa continue to work on diverse projects with councils, non-profit organisations and contemporary art centres creating both permanent and temporary site-specific art installations for indoor and outdoor spaces. Their work has been exhibited widely and placed in collections in the UK, India, Russia and Asia. The artists have just completed an ambitious commission consisting of two 27m high sculptures for the atrium at St Thomas’ Hospital in London due to be launched by the end of 2015.
