Born in 1983 - Thailand
Maitree Siriboon was born in 1983 in Ubon Ratchatani in Thailand.
Nicknamed by his relatives «Mékong Andy Warhol», he has been presented for several years, including to specialized press, as one of the 10th best young artist of Thailand. Steven Pettifor, author of the only work existing about Thai contemporary art, talks about him in most of his interviews as the young Thai artist to follow.
Originally from Issan, the agricultural region of the North West of the country, Maitree Siriboon has been attracted for 15 years by the lights of Bangkok. His childhood landscapes spread through his art, colored and full of trees, rice fields, farmers and water buffalos. He studied at the prestigious University of Silpakorn, where he learned traditional painting and the know-how of mosaic.
But, unlike many of his classmates, he knew how to detach himself from this classical education and the traced path of his masters, for creations that are resolutely contemporary while keeping a local attachment, whether is it the technique used or the society matters covered.
More recently Maitree started to work with photography, with which he invites the foreigners inside his childhood house in Nong-Boa. He thus comes back to one of his favorite theme, his personal relation with natural landscape and thus question his own identity based on his country's Isan culture.
